I thought Hawking’s appeal stemmed primarily from the fact that he was extremely nerdy and disabled and that inspired science followers (who are usually nerds) more that his actual scientific work — which wasn’t particularly groundbreaking.
Having said that Physics and physicists don’t interest me much so maybe I’m wrong.
