True. The overcrowding has always been an issue. But I wonder f we really have the resources to rehabilitate everyone

Plus seems to me a lot of rehabilitation is dependent on individuals themselves having that something inside that could be, and that wants to be, rehabilitated - with a few timely breaks and a little help from some friends

They's why rehabilitation is necessary.you are blaming the victims and suggesting no helpful strategy.
True. The overcrowding has always been an issue. But I wonder f we really have the resources to rehabilitate everyoneDo we have the resources to continue to do what we've been doing? A system that doesn't work for anyone? The US already has the highest incarceration rate and high crime. How do you think that's working for our society? So let's keep the status quo. What a great idea--continue to do what fails miserably and helps no one.

Nor did I say we shouldn't try to rehabilitate folks, just pointing out it's often futile. Furthermore, my feeling is that most successful rehabilitation has something to do with helping the individual find that neglected special something inside of themselves and to help develop it. Beside Lois, aren't you the "determinist"? How can additional resources alter what has been determined?

Change the environment and see what happens. I never said determinism means things are set in stone. That would be pre-determinism. Human consciousness changes every moment. One's environment presents fundamental determining factors.

Sounds better than some of your other comments (going back months) re determinism. :)
Gotta disagree with you here, society needs to feel the right people get what they deserve because that is part of our sense of morality."Society" needs to know that the people in them are doing what needs to be done to keep the whole society safe and sane, not only that criminals "get what they deserve". That's what's always been done and it obviously doesn't work to anyone's advantage. It works to the advantage of most of the public which is the goal, and while your right about the public's need to feel we're being protected, the feeling that justice is being served is more important for society. Think about the recent instances of police killing Blacks under questionable circumstances, and those cops often getting little if any punishment. Or the lack of prosecution for Wall street criminals; that only alienates the public from the judicial system and that contributes to social decay.
True. The overcrowding has always been an issue. But I wonder f we really have the resources to rehabilitate everyoneThe truth is many people in the system probably can't be rehabilitated, the best we can do is warehouse them.
