IS THIS A CASE OF ISLAMOPHOBIA?

The following story has been making the rounds for the past few days.

An ExpressJet flight attendant has been placed on leave for 12 months, supposedly after refusing to serve alcohol on flights.
What do you guys make of this, would you consider her the victim or aggressor?

Just a fool-- for expecting accomodation under the circumstances. If anyone finds herself in a job she won't do, she should find other work. She knew all along that serving alcohol was part of the job. Now that she's changed her religion she thinks she should be be "accommodated." That is supreme arrogance and puts additional and unfair pressure on her co workers and her employer. How would anyone feel about a physician who suddenly becomes a Christian Scientist and refuses to administer any medical care? Should he or she be accommodated? Should others in the practice take over his or her medical duties? Should the physician's salary continue unabated? Or let's take it out of the religion category. How about a painter who develops an allergy to paint? Should he be able to hold onto his painting job and collect his pay for not working? Or do we use common sense in such situations? Lois

Can’t agree more with you on this. By refusing to serve alcohol she failed in an important part of her duty as a flight attendant.
And this, as I am sure you know, is not an isolated case. It is all too common amongst Muslims to expect non-believers (or infidels as they say) to adhere to their brand of religious strictures, or at least acknowledge them willy-nilly. Here in Nigeria, it is a common sight to see a long line of traffic held up for over an hour simply to accommodate Muslim Friday prayers as they would have blocked the main roads en mass with their prayer mats.

It's really the same kind of religious freedom persecution that others in the U.S. try to claim about baking a cake for a gay wedding. The bible tells you not to be gay, and the Koran tells you not to drink alcohol. Performing a paid service is not asking the religious person to marry someone of the same sex, or drink alcohol. Religious texts say what adherents to that faith can or can not do. They do not require people outside that faith to conform. Religious practice is what the individual does, not what others around them do. If their job includes serving others who do not comply to their religious belief, and they don't feel they should serve those peoples needs, then the religious person has to accommodate their own beliefs and resign the job or not do it in the first place. It is infringing on the civil rights of the people they serve to expect the customer to accommodate someone else's religious beliefs. To go further and claim that this lack of accommodation of the customer or the company they work for is equal to hateful behavior toward the religious person and constitutes islamophobia, is ridiculous.

I find it amusing, to say the least, how quickly Muslims catch on to our freedom of religion standards once they’re out of their beloved Muslim countries–even though they apparently don’t know the first thing about how it’s supposed to work. A perfect example of chutzpa.
