Al Franken doesn't mince words about DeVos confirmation

Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) expressed unreserved outrage over Tuesday’s 51-50 Senate confirmation of President Trump’s education secretary, Betsy DeVos: “It’s not a job for amateurs who don’t know the first thing about education,” said Franken in his statement, after Vice President Mike Pence took the Senate floor to cast the tie-breaking vote.
“I voted against the nomination of Betsy DeVos, a billionaire Republican donor, because she is the most incompetent Cabinet-level nominee I have ever seen.”
Republicans have called DeVos, a school-voucher proponent, the kind of reformer the education system needs. Democrats have criticized Republicans’ support for DeVos, pointing to her family’s $200 million in donations to conservatives. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) grilled DeVos on that point during her Senate hearing, demanding to know: “Do you think, if you were not a multi-billionaire, if your family had not made hundreds of millions of dollars of contributions to the Republican Party, that you would be sitting here today?”
Franken echoed Sanders’ frustration Tuesday. “Last night I urged my Republican colleagues to oppose [DeVos’] nomination, because if we cannot set party loyalty aside long enough to perform the essential duty of vetting the president’s nominees, then I don’t know what we are even doing here,” he said in his statement. “Betsy DeVos has demonstrated that she is fundamentally unqualified to lead the Education Department, and it’s a shame that Republicans voted to confirm one of their major donors instead of looking out for our children.” Jeva Lange

I think it is far worse than what Al is saying. He is missing the point which I’m sure is playing into the Republicans game. What is the Republicans game?
The Republicans have become experts at putting forth a “Straw Man” to divert attention from their real purpose. For example, they go with a two pronged attack against “immigration”, first with the flamboyant “We must secure our borders to stop terrorism” Executive Order that makes the headlines and draws all the attention. Next, several Republican legislators propose we reduce the number of immigrants allowed into the country per year.
If they really wanted to reduce terrorism in the US, rather than address immigration they would go after the largest single group of people perpetrating terror crimes in the US: White Christian Males toting guns. But terrorism -> immigration is the “straw man”. Their real goal is to reduce the number of immigrants coming into the US because they are more likely to vote against Republicans, and because it erodes the percentage of their ever dwindling white male christian vote.
But I digress. The “straw man” here is the incompetence of De Vos. Al Franken and the rest are busy attacking her ability to perform the job and the money her family used to buy the votes, which can be argued until we are blue in the face, but it hides the real agenda which has recently been revealed. The REAL issue: Trump and the GOP has declared war on all non-Christians and are taking over the educational system in the US as their first step. But don’t take my word for it:
Education secretary Betsy DeVos wants to ‘advance God’s kingdom’ through US school system

True but that wouldn't have sounded so pithy.

Careful there you conspiracy nutjob you. Next thing you know you'll be saying 911 was a false flag operation designed to usher in a New American Century where Wallstreet and Defense industries would skyrocket and our freedoms under a cleverly worded thing called the Patriot Act could be limited to assist in the corporate takeover. Boy you really just need to trust that their goal is to improve education for kids, especially kids that can't afford private schools.
Careful there you conspiracy nutjob you.
I assume that is sarcasm. What I said was hardly a conspiracy. Its right there for all to see. Its been the GOP tactic for years. Right out of the Nazi playbook (i.e. The Jews are the problem. Hate the Jews!).

And THAT's sarcasm. What she is proposing is the exact opposite. All parents should have a choice. If the poor inner city child is not satisfied with their public school, they need only apply to a charter school or pay for a private school (where tax dollars will go to support reading the Christian bible in school). Yeah, sure. And if they are hungry, let them eat cake.

Exactly. We should probably call Betsy DeVos Queen Antoinette (even though Antoinette never said it). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let_them_eat_cake DeVos would be all a-twitter to be connected to such an idea. But she's a Trump Republican, so what else can we expect?

Of course there is also the possibility that DeVos received her cabinet position as much for her brother as for her heart felt dedication to destroying our public school system

How Betsy DeVos Used God and Amway to Take Over Michigan Politics With her nomination as education secretary, a powerful political clan will bring its overtly Christian agenda to Washington. America now has it's own secret police. Time will tell how potent they are.
http://choosingdemocracy.blogspot.com/2017/01/betsy-devos-and-blackwater.html ... Prince is also the brother of Betsy DeVos, who is in the process of being confirmed as secretary of education — and an advocate for the privatization of public schools. The connection between these two reactionary political players is no secret, but is one of those barely-known facts that has remained mostly hidden in plain sight. Despite significant press around the confirmation hearings for DeVos, the corporate media has not called the public’s attention to her relationship to Prince. Plaudits go to the The Intercept for publishing an article on January 17 by Scahill about Prince's connection to Trump, and highlighting his connection to DeVos. Prince’s biggest claim to infamy is as the founder of Blackwater, a private security firm that hired mercenaries to augment US military forces in Afghanistan and Iraq, among many other places. Blackwater, now transformed into a company called Academi, had an intimate relationship with the CIA, and was regarded by many as one of the CIA’s go to organizations when it wanted to contract out its dirty work. Blackwater got into hot water more than once, particularly in 2007 when some of its mercenaries gunned down 17 Iraqi civilians, including a 9-year old boy, in Baghdad. Scahill reports that trusted sources tell him Prince has been giving Trump advice on his staff picks for the Defense Department and the State Department. Nothing like having friends in high places if you want work. Prince is close to another Trump advisor, the racist Steve Bannon. Prince has often appeared on Bannon’s Breitbart Radio. Last July, Prince told Bannon that a Trump administration could and should create a new version of the Phoenix Program, the CIA assassination program during the Vietnam War that “neutralized" tens of thousands of alleged Viet Cong leaders. The new assassination program would presumably target “radical Islamic extremists," and who knows who else. DeVos, while not a public advocate of murder like her brother, has worked for decades in an effort to undermine and assassinate public education. A billionaire heir to the Amway fortune, she is a prominent Republican donor and fund-raiser. ...

NOTORIOUS MERCENARY ERIK PRINCE IS ADVISING TRUMP FROM THE SHADOWS Jeremy Scahill |. January 17 2017 https://theintercept.com/2017/01/17/notorious-mercenary-erik-prince-is-advising-trump-from-the-shadows/ ERIK PRINCE, AMERICA’S most notorious mercenary, is lurking in the shadows of the incoming Trump administration. A former senior U.S. official who has advised the Trump transition told The Intercept that Prince has been advising the team on matters related to intelligence and defense, including weighing in on candidates for the Defense and State departments. The official asked not to be identified because of a transition policy prohibiting discussion of confidential deliberations. On election night, Prince’s latest wife, Stacy DeLuke, posted pictures from inside Trump’s campaign headquarters as Donald Trump and Mike Pence watched the returns come in, including a close shot of Pence and Trump with their families. “We know some people who worked closely with [Trump] on his campaign," DeLuke wrote. “Waiting for the numbers to come in last night. It was well worth the wait!!!! #PresidentTrump2016." Prince’s sister, billionaire Betsy DeVos, is Trump’s nominee for education secretary and Prince (and his mother) gave large sums of money to a Trump Super PAC. In July, Prince told Trump’s senior adviser and white supremacist Steve Bannon, at the time head of Breitbart News, that the Trump administration should recreate a version of the Phoenix Program, the CIA assassination ring that operated during the Vietnam War, to fight ISIS. Such a program, Prince said, could kill or capture “the funders of Islamic terror and that would even be the wealthy radical Islamist billionaires funding it from the Middle East, and any of the other illicit activities they’re in." ...
Imagine, it's going to get worse than you can imagine. :ahhh: :long:

The language used here indicates part of the problem. My relatives have been saying that the government is taking over education for decades. They say there shouldn’t be a Dept of Education, it’s not in the constitution. The dept has only been around since 1980, so eliminating it won’t be the worse thing that could happen. What will be interesting will be to see how giving rich people gov’t money, in the form of vouchers, will not be considered gov’t taking over by those same relatives.

Of course not. Giving money and advantages to rich people has never been a problem; helping people in need is. That's socialism and it MUST be stamped out. Lois

It wasn't sarcasm. The false flag operation we refer to as 911 was there in plain sight too for all to see, first mentioned by the PNAC. And yet otherwise rational people are willing to stick their heads into the ground and believe the government at the time was innocent. But that's another thread.
